三昧耶

samaya is variously defined as [lang id =1028]會 coming together, meeting, convention; [lang id =1028]時 timely; [lang id =1028]宗 in agreement, of the same class; [lang id =1028]平等 equal, equalized; [lang id =1028]驚覺 aroused, warned; [lang id =1028]除垢障 riddance of unclean hindrances. Especially it is used as indicating the vows made by Buddhas and bodhisattvas, hence as a tally, symbol, or emblem of the spiritual quality of a Buddha or bodhisattva.
